One of the most awaited award events, the Oscars took place on April 25, and it was filled with big wins, glamorous moments, and as reports suggest, a whole lot of Covid protocols! While we already know this year’s Oscar winners, here are some red carpet wins you need to know about!
Chloé Zhao, awarded Best Director for Nomadland, not only broke records by being the second female director and first woman of colour to win the coveted title, she also proved to be a whiff of fresh air on the Oscars’ red carpet with her easy yet chic sense of style. She wore a neutral-toned, ruched Hermès dress paired with a classic pair of white sneakers and her statement braided hairstyle.

Also giving us a memorable red carpet moment was the stars and producers of Crip Cramp, a Netflix documentary, nominated for best documentary feature. The team included both directors, Nicole Newnham and Jim LeBrecht who wore an elegant muted gown and a custom-made navy blue Gucci suit respectively. Joining them were the stars of the documentary, Andraea LaVant, a Black disabled woman who wore a sequined dress seated on a motorized wheelchair which her labrador service dog to keep her company; Judy Heumann, a white disabled woman in a white dress suit also seated in a motorized wheelchair and Jim LeBrecht, a white disabled man, is wearing a blue tuxedo also on a motorized wheelchair. To make sure wheelchair users could conveniently go up the stage, the Oscars stage also had a ramp for the very first time.

Painting the town red, quite literally, in their red ensembles were Angela Bassett in Alberta Ferretti and Chopard jewellery, The Crown actress Olivia Colman in Dior Haute Couture and Chopard jewellery as well as Amanda Seyfried in Armani Privé

Having a glistening sartorial moment were co-nominees Andra Day in cutout style gold gown by Vera Wang and Carey Mulligan in a fully sequined gold ensemble by Valentino Haute Couture. Joining the gold gang was double Oscar nominee Leslie Odom Jr. who opted for a gold Brioni suit and Cartier jewellery.

The Oscars’ most talked-about ensemble was that of Malcolm & Marie star Zendaya, who adorned a vibrant cutout gown from Valentino and a Bulgari necklace, finishing the look with her beachy waves hairstyle.

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom star Colman Domingo made a vibrant statement in a fuschia suit by Atelier Versace which reportedly took a whopping 150 hours of embroidery work, complete with 4500 precious Swarovski crystals, sequins and golden buttons. The star finished the look with Christian Louboutin shoes and David Yurman jewellery.
Martin Desmond Roe and Travon Free, who won the title for best live action short for their film Two Distant Strangers, used their red carpet ensembles to pay a subtle tribute to the late Kobe Bryant with their jersey numbers pinned on their lapels, 24 and two which were Bryant and his daughter's jersey numbers. The director duo’s custom-made Dolce and Gabbana suits also had the scripted names of 17 African American victims of police brutality along with their Nike Air sneakers featuring stamped names, including that of George Floyd.
