American toy company, Mattel, has launched an eco-friendly version of its iconic Barbie dolls. The new doll collection, called Barbie Loves the Ocean, is made of 90 per cent recycled plastic. The recycled plastic was sourced from ocean-bound waste, which consists of abandoned plastic waste found 50 kilometres of a coastal area and hasn’t yet made its way into the ocean.
The launch of the recycled plastic doll collection comes as a part of Mattel’s sustainability goal to use 100 per cent recycled, recyclable or bio-based plastic materials in their products, and to use more than 75 per cent fibres made of sustainable materials in its fashions, by the year 2030. The new collection includes three individual dolls as well as beach-themed play sets.
As a part of its commitment to sustainability and ocean conservation, Mattel has also partnered with sustainable apparel company 4ocean for the launch of a limited edition Barbie X 4ocean bracelet, which is made from 100 per cent recycled materials. The sales from the bracelets are meant to fund ocean-cleaning drives.
The company also includes sustainable packaging as a part of its sustainability goals, aiming to use 95 per cent recycled, or Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified paper, or wood fibre in their packaging by the end of the year and 100 per cent recycled, recyclable or bio-based materials by 2030.
