The festival of Eid Al Fitr is upon us. It’s a time of celebration, community, and delectable feasts. However, given that there are no clear signs of the pandemic abating, perhaps the biggest gift during this day, is people choosing to act responsibly and continuing their commitment towards maintaining all precautionary measures to curb the spread of this global killer. So, how exactly can you do your part, and make Eid 2021 an even bigger success? Employing safe, socially-distanced practices, and celebrating in the comfort of your home.
However, given that Eid is a time of giving, the festival is also celebrated by offering zakat—considered one of the five pillars of Islam. So, what can you do to give back, while ensuring the safety of you, your family, and everyone around you? Here’s how:
Make a charitable donation
Charity plays a big part in Eid celebrations. However, stepping out and meeting people significantly increases your chances of contracting the virus, despite being vaccinated. This is why you should consider making a charitable donation to an organisation that will put your contribution to good use. Consider the Akshaya Patra COVID Relief fund, or choose from various Islamic organisations feeding the hungry around the world. There’s Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association, Islamic Relief Worldwide, and Muslims Against Hunger to name a few.
Organise a virtual Iftaar party
Iftaar, the meal with which Muslims across the globe break their fast, is undoubtedly a big part of Eid celebrations. Is it really surprising then that preparations for the feast tend to begin a day in advance? Traditionally, people visit loved ones on the evening of Eid, to break their fast and celebrate together. However, given the current scenario, people must take conscious efforts to avoid social visits, and instead, take their celebrations digital. There is no dearth of video calling platforms, so just share the invite and break bread together—in the comfort and safety of your own homes.
Attend a virtual concert with your family
Given that Eid is a festival that bring communities together, attending various virtual concerts that foster a sense of belonging and community, especially during times like these, is a great way to celebrate Eid. Like last year, many virtual concerts are being organised to help people celebrate during lockdown. Take for example Egyptian singer Mohamed Mounir. He announced a few concerts already. Log onto Event Brite, UK and type in Eid in the search bar to find something that works for you and your family.
