With the festival of holi upon us, it’s quite possible that some celebrations are bound to happen, even on a small-scale. After all, who can resist such a colourful festival? Now, while the use of organic colours is encouraged, there are still some who use pigments and more, that can irritate your skin and hair. If not taken care of in due time, they can cause long-term damage. Here’s where we come to your rescue. Check out these pre and post holi beauty rituals that can help you keep your skin and your tresses safe and free of any damage.
Pre-holi ritual
The most important thing to remember is prep your skin in advance so as to minimise the damage through the colours. You can begin with oiling your entire body the night before. Use either coconut or olive oil as per your preference, and massage it generously so your skin can absorb it. Make sure your face and body are well moisturised. Apply coconut oil in your hair and massage it well, comb it thoroughly, and tie it before you hit the bed. The oils and moisturisers will act as a protective barrier.
On the day
Before heading out, apply another layer of oil or moisturiser, followed by a sunscreen, with SPF 50 as you would be out in the sun for the most part. Don’t forget to apply a layer of Vaseline on your eyelids, lips, and ears as it will help get the colours off faster. Apply atleast two coats of clear nail polish on your nails, or oil the cuticles so the colour doesn’t stick to them. It is advisable to wear full sleeves clothing so as to minimise the contact between your skin and colour as much as possible.
Post-holi ritual
Post your celebrations, use a moisturising cleanser to get the colour off as much as you can. Once you’re in the shower, use a clarifying shampoo to get rid of the excess colour from your hair, and lightly scrub your body using a loofah to take off the colours. If post shower there is some sort of redness or itching, first apply ice to calm the skin, followed by a moisturiser. The key is to keep your skin hydrated at all times.
