Inculcating the habit of reading is a great way to help your kids broaden their horizons, improve their imagination, and even travel around the world on different adventures. And Kolkata certainly thinks so, too. In a first of its kind initiative, The West Bengal Transport Corporation has collaborated with a heritage book store to launch a children’s library on a boat—the Young Readers’ Boat Library.
What’s exciting is that children will be able to choose from 500 titles in English and Bengali, while enjoying a boat ride which will commence at Millenium Park, travel to Belur Math jetty, and return.
According to an official, the idea behind this initiative is that one can read while appreciating the beauty of Kolkata, cruising on the Hooghly River. “The boat library would take people on a three-hour-long trip,” the official said in a statement to the media on January 26. He also added that there will be three trips on all weekdays.
Some of the additional benefits of the library is that it will offer passengers free WiFi, as well. A single round boar ride will cost ₹100 for adults, and ₹50 for children. Apart from the selection of books available at the library, children will also be able to partake in various activities such as storytelling, dramatised readings, poetry recitals, book launches, music, and much more.
